Castello di Vincigliata sits on a rocky hill east of Fiesole, a short drive from the centre of Florence. Its story goes back to the Middle Ages, but the castle you see today was rebuilt in the 19th century by the Englishman John Temple Leader, who turned a ruin into a romantic neo-Gothic dream and planted the surrounding woods.
For a bride it feels like stepping into a fairy tale: a gate guarded by two stone lions, an Italian garden with a fountain and a sunken cloister, crenellated walls and views over the hills towards Florence. Queen Victoria came here to paint the garden, and it still has that unhurried, storybook feeling.
Photographing your wedding here
I love castles like this because every corner frames a picture: the lion gate for your arrival, the cloister for soft light during portraits, and the walls and cypresses for golden hour. I usually plan the couple portraits for the last hour before sunset, when the stone turns warm and the hills of Fiesole glow behind you.
