Castello di Duino stands on a rocky bluff above the sea at Duino, just up the coast from Trieste and Miramare. Built in the early 1300s, it became a meeting place for artists and royalty, and the poet Rainer Maria Rilke wrote here. It is still the private home of the Princes della Torre e Tasso.
Its gardens spread over several terraces along the cliffs, with thousands of flowers and the whole Gulf of Trieste in front of you. The castle hosts weddings and gala dinners, and it is only about an hour from Ljubljana, which makes it easy for Slovenian and international guests alike.
